Deteriorating bridge in Lahad Datu raises safety concerns
Poor condition of pedestrian bridge puts student safety at risk.
LAHAD DATU: The deteriorating condition of a pedestrian bridge in front of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pekan Lahad Datu has raised concerns among parents and the school regarding the potential risks to pupils’ safety.

Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) Chairman of SK Pekan Lahad Datu, Mohd Yassin Hapas, pointed out that the bridge had developed serious signs of damage, including rusted metal parts, holes in the stairs and walkway flooring, and cables along the stairs that could obstruct pedestrians.

He added that gaps on the side of the bridge posed further risks, particularly if pupils stepped on or climbed the weakened sections.

Despite the school and PIBG lodging a report with the District Office, no repair or maintenance work has been carried out so far.

Mohd Yassin emphasised that the safety of students who use the bridge daily should be taken seriously to prevent any potential accidents.

“We do not want to wait until an accident happens before action is taken. The safety of children using this route every day should be prioritised,” he said.

He called on the relevant authorities to take immediate action by conducting inspections and carrying out necessary repairs to ensure the safety of pupils and the public.
