Kota Kinabalu: Sebangga Group via its Sebangga Mitsinbo, Malaysia’s sole authorised Volvo car dealer for East Malaysia, has officially launched the new Volvo ES90, the brand’s first fully Electric Vehicle (EV) Sedan, here, on March 28.

Founder of Sebangga Group Dato’ Arif Ambrose Ng said the unveiling of the latest model of Volvo ES90 marks both a festive celebration and a strategic move to introduce the latest electric vehicle (EV) offering to Malaysians.

He said the event coincides with the recent Chinese New Year and the ongoing Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations period, making it an opportune time to showcase the new model.

“The ES90 is a fully electric vehicle, but what sets it apart is its unique blend of a sedan and a sport utility vehicle (SUV).

“It has a slightly higher ground clearance, making it more suitable for local terrain, particularly in Sabah.

“In fact, with the current global fuel price increases, electric vehicles are the best solution,” he said to Daily Express after the official unveiling of the new fully EV Volvo ES90 at Hilton Hotel here, recently.

Ambrose added that the model prioritises safety — a hallmark of the Volvo brand — while offering enhanced comfort and a more spacious interior, particularly for rear passengers.

He said the introduction of EVs such as the ES90 is timely following global uncertainties and rising fuel prices.

“Electric vehicles will eventually play a pivotal role in the automotive industry and could be a game changer in the future,” he said, adding that the launch also serves to raise awareness on the growing importance of EV adoption in Malaysia.

On its market appeal, Ambrose said the ES90 is designed to cater to a wide range of users, including families and younger drivers.

“It is a versatile vehicle that combines the practicality of an SUV with the comfort of a sedan, making it ideal for families. At the same time, it appeals to younger buyers seeking a premium yet understated vehicle,” he said.

He stressed that safety remains Volvo’s key selling point, noting that the brand’s philosophy centres on protecting lives.

“At the end of the day, there is no price that can be placed on life. Safety is paramount, especially when travelling with loved ones,” he said.

Ambrose said demand for the model in Sabah would depend on market response, but noted that an introductory promotion is currently being offered nationwide.

“The first 100 customers will enjoy a rebate of RM27,000. This promotion is available nationwide and will end once the allocation is fully taken up,” he said.

He added that the ES90’s minimalist design and understated premium appeal are expected to attract discerning buyers.

“Many choose Volvo because it is a premium yet subtle brand. It appeals to those who prefer a low-profile image while enjoying comfort, safety and quality,” he said.

Ambrose also observed that interest in EVs is steadily increasing, making this an opportune time for consumers to consider a premium electric vehicle offering.

Meanwhile, Dealer Principle Sebangga, authorized Volvo Car Dealer for East Malaysia, Mohd Nazly Yahya said Sebangga Mitsinbo is positioning the new Volvo ES90 as a game-changing offering for the Sabah market, particularly as the brand’s first fully electric sedan.

He said the ES90 marks a significant milestone for Volvo, which previously focused on plug-in hybrid models.

“This is Volvo’s first fully electric sedan. It was launched in Peninsular Malaysia last month, and although Sabah is receiving it slightly later due to shipment delays, customers here will still enjoy the same promotional benefits,” he said to Daily Express at the event.

On performance, Nazly said the ES90 offers a range of up to 651km based on the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), effectively addressing concerns over range anxiety.

“With a full charge, the vehicle can travel from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau, which is covering a distance of 500km, without issue. Journeys to Sandakan for 350km or Labuan for 200km are also well within range.

“As for charging duration, it varies depending on the method used, with a full charge via single phase standard home charging taking approximately 15 to 16 hours.

“An overnight charge typically provides about 50 per cent capacity, which translates to roughly 300km of range. Fast charging using DC chargers can deliver up to 100 to 150km range in just 15 minutes,” he said.

Nazly said EV ownership requires a shift in mindset, with users encouraged to adopt regular overnight charging habits rather than waiting until the battery is depleted.

“In terms of cost, a full charge for the ES90’s 88kWh battery is estimated to be between RM60 and RM70, making it a cost-effective alternative to conventional fuel,” he said.

He added that the ES90 is well-suited to Sabah’s road conditions and terrain, with a ground clearance of around seven inches, offering a balance between sedan comfort and SUV practicality.

Among its premium features, Nazly said is a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system delivering 1,610 watts, complete with immersive 3D audio and Dolby Atmos capability.

He said the model is available in four colour options — Onyx Black, Crystal White, Denim Blue and Vapour Grey — catering to a range of customer preferences.
