NABAWAN: The bridge across the Pamuntarain River along Jalan Pamuntrian-Ponontomon has been rendered impassable following damage, Sunday.

Nabawan District Public Works Department Engineer Ahmad Fairuz Yunus said the bridge is unsafe for vehicles to cross.

“One abutment has been damaged as shown in photographs that have gone viral, while the other abutment is still being assessed by our team. Any repair or replacement will depend on the current condition of that second abutment,” he said.

Ahmad Fairuz added that should replacement or repair works proceed, the bridge would need to be closed during the works period. He also noted that a temporary bypass route near the location is not feasible due to technical constraints.

Nabawan District Officer Marshal Anthony, when contacted, said the concessionaire is currently conducting an inspection and cost assessment, adding that repair works would be carried out urgently once the evaluation is completed.

The damage has left residents in Kampung Nakuyung, Salarom Baru and Ulu Mosopoh without their only direct road link to Pekan Nabawan, prompting calls for immediate action.

Affected villagers fear any prolonged delay in repairs would not only disrupt daily activities but also impact students attending SMK Nabawan II and teachers posted at SK Ulu Mosopoh who rely on the bridge as their primary route.
