Kunak garbage collection is stepped up
Garbage collection has been optimised, including the placement of RoRo bins such as this one at PPR Sri Pangkalan.
KUNAK: Garbage collection and disposal work here have been optimised, including increasing the frequency of domestic waste collection, particularly in residential areas, commercial premises and government buildings, to ensure environmental cleanliness.

The areas involved include the People’s Housing Project (PPR) Sri Pangkalan, Sri Idaman housing area, Kunak Kaya housing estate, commercial and business premises, as well as government buildings including schools.

Kunak District Council (MDKNK) Executive Officer Mohd Nazri Pintal said monitoring has also been carried out by the domestic waste maintenance concessionaire to prevent garbage from piling up for long periods during the festive season.

He said waste collection, particularly bulky waste, has been intensified by the concessionaire during the festive period, with additional services provided.

“This step aims to ensure a clean environment while maintaining the regular domestic waste collection schedule,” he said.

Nazri said the provision of roll-on roll-off (RoRo) bins is an important measure to accommodate the increase in waste, especially since the start of Ramadan and with Hari Raya approaching.

He added that tonnes of solid waste are generated daily and transported to disposal centres.

Nazri said the council had also held a meeting with the concessionaire’s representatives to discuss waste management issues, including previous delays in scheduled garbage collection.

He also expressed appreciation to the media, particularly Daily Express, for helping to channel accurate information to the public regarding waste issues that recently went viral on social media.

The council and concessionaire have assured that delays in waste collection can be addressed through cooperation among all parties, including the public, to ensure a sustainable environment.

He explained that the recent delays were due to several factors, including maintenance of compactor and hydraulic trucks. Replacement of damaged garbage bins has also been carried out.

Meanwhile, the council urged the public to play their part by disposing of waste properly into the bins provided, including RoRo bins and mobile garbage bins for commercial use placed at strategic locations.
