Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department recorded 1,910 fire incidents which claimed 13 lives and caused losses totalling RM145 million statewide in 2025.
Its Director Mohd Pisar Aziz said structural fires accounted for 42 per cent of cases, with 692 incidents caused by electrical faults, making it the leading cause of house fires.

“This data reflects the importance of awareness towards fire risks, particularly those resulting from electrical usage in homes,” he said during the launch of the Fire Safety and Festive Preparedness Campaign 2026, recently.
The event was officiated by Sabah Local Government and Housing Minister’s Political Secretary Abdul Wahid Abdul Razak.
Mohd Pisar said early prevention and routine monitoring, such as ensuring electrical switches and household appliances are safe before leaving them unattended, can significantly reduce fire risks.
“The festive season is eagerly anticipated, but celebration must go hand in hand with safety awareness,” he said.
He urged the public to take simple yet critical actions, including switching off electrical mains before leaving home and ensuring candles and stoves are not left unsupervised.
“Additionally, avoid playing with firecrackers or fireworks without proper control, and keep emergency fire department numbers in easily accessible locations.
“These measures can save lives and property, while fostering a strong safety culture in the community by making safety a shared responsibility,” he said.
