Keningau loses RM2.44 million to scammers

KENINGAU: A total of RM2.44 million in losses due to commercial crime reported in the district last year. District Police Chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai said 145 investigation papers were opened, resulting in the arrest of 51 suspects. 

For the period between January and March 22 2026, 49 investigation papers have been opened involving losses of RM366,000, with 13 suspects detained. Most cases involve online fraud under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Yampil advised the public to remain cautious during online financial transactions, to not be easily deceived and to avoid clicking on suspicious links.

He also emphasised the importance of community cooperation in curbing drug abuse.

Crime statistics show 143 cases were recorded in 2025 compared to 123 cases in 2024. As of March 2026, criminal cases have decreased to 22. The 2025 index crime involved 40 violent crimes and 103 property crimes, with a resolution rate of 88.81 per cent.

Regarding traffic matters, he said 969 accidents were recorded in 2025 with 24 fatalities, while up to March 2026, accidents have decreased to 197 cases with only 1 fatality.

“The police will continue to intensify patrols and the use of technology in crime prevention, in line with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) transformation towards modern policing,” he said.
