KIULU: More than 700 participants took part in the 6th Kiulu Adventure Challenge on Sunday, drawing athletes from Brunei, the United Kingdom, Indonesia and Peninsular Malaysia.
Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who officiated the event, said the strong turnout reflects Kiulu’s growing reputation as a hub for outdoor and adventure sports.

He said the challenge supports domestic tourism by drawing enthusiasts to rural areas while strengthening efforts to internationalise Kiulu and Sabah’s rural tourism offerings.
Joniston, who is also the Kiulu assemblyman, said the event boosts the local economy, with homestays and food outlets enjoying increased demand as participants and visitors fill the district.
This year’s edition featured mountain biking, trail running and rafting, alongside community activities such as traditional games, craft displays and mural painting, attended by Sabah Tourism Board CEO Julinus Jimit.
