LABUAN: A 57-year-old who went to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) office here on Thursday to renew his driving licence was shocked when advised by a staff that he should be properly attired in future.
“I have been in and out of JPJ office many times for various reasons before and never encountered such moral enforcement.
“Due to blistering hot weather, I was wearing decent shorts. I fail to understand the rule being applied without discretion,” said Harold Lim.
He added that he had several places to visit and should not be expected to have a sarong as standby to change into.
“After all, I am a man and not a woman and shorts is appropriate,” he said.
Harold said the rule should be reviewed as it was also in the interest of JPJ to ensure people have valid driving licences.
He recalled that this dress code issue was supposed to have been settled after the December 2025 incident in Melaka.
In that incident, a 56-year-old woman was denied entry at a police station when she went to make report on an accident because she was wearing knee-length skirt, forcing her to buy trousers at a nearby stall and change.
Following that incident, the Federal Cabinet decided that there would be no dress code as long as the attire was decent.
