NABAWAN: Six people escaped unhurt after a wooden-and-steel bridge at Kampung Malinja here collapsed under the weight of a 20-tonne lorry on Thursday morning.
The Nabawan Fire and Rescue station received the distress call at 11.26am and arrived three minutes later to find the 25-foot bridge had given way beneath the vehicle carrying drinking water supplies.
Officials said the lorry, travelling from Keningau to Nabawan township, exceeded the bridge’s six-tonne weight limit, causing the structure to fail as it attempted to cross.
Firefighters, assisted by police, PWD officers and a nearby contractor’s excavator, worked to remove the lorry and ensure the route was safe for further assessment.
The road remains temporarily closed, with motorists advised to use Jalan Nabawan TWP while PWD evaluates the damage to the collapsed bridge.
