SEMPORNA: Police arrested a fireworks trader in a raid codenamed Ops Keberhasilan for selling the items without licence.
District Police Chief Supt Tan Hiap Wah said police also seized a variety of fireworks and firecrackers worth more than RM300 during the operation.
He said the 27-year-old foreigner would be investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
“We received 11 applications to sell fireworks and firecrackers in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
“Eight licences and permits were issued while three applications were rejected,” he said, adding that despite the availability, some are still selling fireworks and firecrackers without permit.
Tan advised the public to exercise caution when using or playing with fireworks, especially in crowded public and tourist areas.
He said stern action could be taken under Section 268 of the Penal Code and Section 286 of the Penal Code.
“Following public tip-off, I have ordered the Unit Kereta Peronda (MPV) and Unit Rondaan Bermotor (URB) to carry out monitoring of firework activities in areas that have been identified,” he said.
He also urged parents to monitor their children while playing fireworks and firecrackers to avoid any untoward incident such as injuries and fire.
