PENAMPANG: Police detained a local suspected of involvement in thefts targeting gold shops in the Penampang and Putatan districts.
Acting on information, a team from the Penampang District Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Division (CID) arrested the 45-year-old suspect at about 1pm on Tuesday at a commercial building in Kota Kinabalu.
Penampang District Police Chief Supt Sammy Newton said further investigations led to the seizure of six gold bracelets of various sizes, estimated worth RM50,000 based on market value.
“Police also seized a vehicle, a mobile phone, clothing and related documents to assist further investigations.
“Checks revealed the suspect has several past records involving property crimes and drug abuse,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine, and for repeat offences may also include whipping.
Sammy urged the public to continue acting as the eyes and ears of the authorities.
He called on those with information on criminal or suspicious activities to come forward to assist in maintaining public safety and order.
