Ops Tapis: Eight held in Sandakan for drugs

SANDAKAN: District police have arrested eight individuals, including two women, during a series of “Ops Tapis” operations at various locations across the district aimed at combating drug abuse and trafficking.

In an operation on March 29 along the roadside of Dewan Sibuga, Mile 8, a man was detained on suspicion of consuming dangerous drugs.

He was taken to Sandakan Police Headquarters for an initial urine screening, which tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. The suspect was detained under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

On the same day, a raid at a room in Bandar Ramai-Ramai led to the arrest of a woman whose urine test also returned positive results for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

She was similarly detained under Section 15(1)(a).

The operations continued with a raid on an unnumbered flat, where a man and a woman were arrested in separate rooms for possession of syabu (methamphetamine).

Screening tests confirmed that both were positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. 

The female suspect was detained under Sections 39A(1) and 15(1)(a), while the male suspect was held under Sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the same Act.

Separate operations on March 27 led to the arrest of three men in Taman Kenari and Batu Sapi for drug possession and consumption, while another man brought in by officers from Seguntur Police Station also tested positive for drugs.

All eight suspects are currently being held at the Sandakan Police Headquarters lock-up to assist with further investigations.

Sandakan District Police Chief ACP George Abd Rakman said the operations will continue to be intensified and urged the public to provide information to help eradicate drug-related crimes.
