RM850k smuggled fags, firecrackers seized in Kinabatangan

KINABATANGAN: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) uncovered a stash of smuggled cigarettes and firecrackers after raiding three unnumbered premises in Kampung Paris III here last Wednesday.

During the operation on March 11, security forces seized 4,486 cartons of kretek and white cigarettes of various brands, along with 143 cartons of firecrackers. The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM850,000 after tax.

Esscom Commander DCP Datuk Victor B. Sanjos said the raid was carried out following public information regarding cigarette smuggling activities in the area.

He said inspections at the three premises uncovered cigarettes of various brands including Astro Merah, Neslite, Astro Fuze, Era Biru, L.A Bold, Nice, Extreme Mild, A Satu Premium and Tembakau Salak, which were hidden in boxes and plastic packaging.

“This seizure is believed to be in violation of the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2017 and all confiscated items have been handed over to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for further action under the Customs Act 1967,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

Victor said the success of the operation reflects ESSCOM’s continued commitment to combating cross-border crime in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESS Zone).

“Esscom will continue intensifying special operations to curb elements that may threaten public security, order and wellbeing, particularly in eastern Sabah.

“We will also strengthen operational coordination with other security agencies to combat criminal activities such as sea robbery and contraband smuggling on land and in the waters of the ESS Zone,” he said.

He also welcomed cooperation from the public to channel information on suspicious activities to the Esscom Operations Centre at 089-863181 or via WhatsApp at 011-63311072.
