Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old man claimed trial to eight charges of falsifying documents for the purpose of cheating, which resulted in two financial institutions approving his application for Commodity Murabahah Term Financing-i (CMTF-i) amounting to RM1 million.

Wong Chian Vui made the plea before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus after all the charges against him were read out on Thursday.

On the first to eighth counts, Wong is accused of falsifying documents, namely trading licences and bank statements, which were attached to the financing application forms between Feb 19 and Feb 24, 2021 at financial institutions in Kota Belud and Kota Kinabalu.

The charges stated that because of the falsified documents, the financial institutions approved Wong’s application for Commodity Murabahah Term Financing-i (CMTF-i) amounting to RM500,000 from each institution.

The alternative charges fall under Section 471 of the Penal Code and are punishable under Section 468 of the same Code.

The court set Apr 29 for pre-trial case management and released Wong on bail of RM30,000 with RM10,000 deposited and his wife as surety.

Wong was also ordered to report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) once every two months, not to tamper with prosecution witnesses, and to surrender his passport to the court every time his case is mentioned as he is currently working in Singapore.

Earlier, MACC Deputy Public Prosecutor Rustam Sanip proposed bail of RM50,000 with RM30,000 deposited with a local surety, along with several additional conditions.

However, counsel Datuk Ram Singh and Elmer Prem Gunasan, who defended Wong, asked for the bail amount to be reduced as he has a wife and an 18-month-old baby to look after.

Ram also applied for Wong’s passport to be released as his client is currently working in Singapore and had obtained an employment pass valid from Jan 5, 2026 until Jan 5, 2028.
