Kota Kinabalu: A 45-year-old man was charged in the Sessions Court here with having Mitragynine, locally known as Ketum.
Adi Awang pleaded guilty before Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan to having about 500ml of a substance containing mitragynine at the roadside of Kampung Laut, Kinarut, Papar, at 2pm on March 27, this year.
The offence under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, punishable under Section 30(5) of the same Act, carries a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both, on conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ronnie Anthony applied for another mention date pending the chemist’s report and offered no bail.
The accused applied for bail, citing that he has parents and children dependent on him.
The court fixed May 4 for mention and allowed bail at RM5,000 in two sureties.
