PENAMPANG: A 45-year-old local man was arrested on Tuesday (March 31) in connection with a series of thefts at gold shops in Penampang and Putatan, said district police chief Supt Sammy Newton.
He said the suspect was detained at about 1pm by a Criminal Investigation Department team in a commercial area in Kota Kinabalu following information received.
Police also seized six gold bracelets of various sizes, estimated to be worth RM50,000, along with a vehicle, a mobile phone, clothing and related documents to assist investigations.
Checks found the suspect has several records related to property crimes and drug abuse, he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine and whipping for repeat offences, while the public is urged to channel information on criminal or suspicious activities to the police.
