Tuaran: A local man was detained by the Sabah Wildlife Department for allegedly selling parts of protected wildlife at a stall in the Tenghilan Tamu site here Thursday.
The arrest was made at about 8.05am during an enforcement operation carried out by the department’s Rapid Response Team following intelligence on illegal wildlife parts being sold in the area.
Among the items seized were two sun bear claws, a sun bear paw, a sun bear tooth, a pangolin scale, a barking deer antler and 16 porcupine quills believed to have been displayed for illegal sale.
The 30-year-old suspect is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.
Under the law, anyone found possessing, storing or trading fully protected species such as sun bears and pangolins without a permit faces a fine of between RM50,000 and RM250,000 and imprisonment of one to five years upon conviction.
