Kota Kinabalu: A 36-year-old man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here with trafficking 30kg of syabu.

No plea was recorded from Lua Wei Yuan after the charge was read before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus on Friday.

Lua is accused of trafficking 30,000.30 grammes of syabu on March 3 this year at 10.45pm at Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

The charge, under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, along with a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kareena Kaur Gill Karamjit Singh applied for another mention date pending the chemist’s report and opposed bail, as the charge has no provision for it.

Magistrate Dzul set May 5 for mention while awaiting the chemist’s report. Lua was ordered to be remanded further.
