BEAUFORT: Residents near Sungai Melabau are calling on the Wildlife Department to set traps and reduce the crocodile population in the river, amid growing safety concerns for anglers and the surrounding community.
Rancangan Klias resident, Adeli Abat, who contacted Daily Express on Saturday, said he personally witnessed the reptile sunbathing at around 10.30am. He estimated the crocodile to be about two metres in length and weighing around 100 kilograms.
“The area is a favourite fishing spot for locals and visitors from outside. What worries us is that if they are not careful, they could be attacked by the crocodile,” he said.
Adeli urged the public to exercise extreme caution, pointing out that crocodiles can surface silently and approach unsuspecting individuals without warning.
