BEAUFORT: Surau Ar Rayyan in Kampung Batu 60 has suffered extensive damage due to recent flooding, leaving residents unable to carry out daily prayers, including Tarawih prayers during the month of Ramadan.
Community Development Leader (UPPM) Ali Hassan Sirin confirmed the incident on Saturday, stating that both the interior and exterior of the surau had been severely affected by the floods.
He visited the surau, which had been submerged during the heavy rains, and discovered widespread damage throughout the premises. Prayer mats were soaked, and many copies of the Quran had been damaged.
“Muslim residents have been unable to perform congregational prayers for some time, and it has also disrupted their ability to perform Tarawih prayers,” he said.
Ali Hassan further explained that the prayer area is now covered in mud, creating a slippery surface, especially when wet.
He said the cleaning process would take time and would require cooperation from the community through gotong-royong (communal work).
Outside the surau, the fence had collapsed due to the strong flood currents. Ali Hassan assured that efforts to repair the fence would begin as soon as possible.
He urged the Muslim community in the village to remain patient, describing the situation as a test of faith.
He also encouraged residents to come together to clean the prayer area, including the floors, prayer mats, and the lower section of the surau, to restore the place of worship.
“We will work together to clean the surau so that the Muslim community in this village can perform their prayers comfortably, including in the lower section of the surau,” he said.
