LAHAD DATU: Three people were killed and a child was seriously injured when a Toyota Innova collided with a 30-tonne trailer lorry on Jalan Dewata, Pondok Ketam, here on Monday afternoon.
The Fire and Rescue Department said the Innova, travelling from Lahad Datu towards Kunak, was dragged for about 30 metres after the head-on impact with the lorry coming from the opposite direction.
Nine firefighters from the Lahad Datu station worked to free the victims who were trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicle using specialised rescue tools.
Medical personnel confirmed that the 56-year-old male driver, a 43-year-old male passenger and a 39-year-old female passenger died at the scene, while an eight-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash, while the lorry driver, who escaped unharmed, has already lodged a report at the nearest station.
