TAWAU: A motorcyclist died after sustaining severe injuries in a road accident involving a four-wheel-drive vehicle near Tawau Airport at about 2pm on Sunday.
The 29-year-old victim, an oil palm plantation worker, was pronounced dead while receiving treatment in the Red Zone ward of Tawau Hospital.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said police received information about the accident involving a Honda Wave Alpha motorcycle and a Toyota Hilux at about 2.30pm before dispatching a team to the scene.
Initial investigations found the 45-year-old 4WD driver was travelling from Sin On towards the airport when the motorcyclist suddenly emerged from the left side of the road and entered the vehicle’s path.
He said the collision, believed to be caused by close distance which prevented the driver from avoiding impact, threw the victim into the opposite lane before he fell into a roadside drain, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
