TAWAU: Six shop lots were destroyed in an early morning fire at Kampung Kinabutan Kecil, Batu 4, Jalan Apas, on Wednesday.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Station Chief Jemishin Ujin said the fire, which severely damaged the wooden structures, left around 80 per cent of the six shop lots destroyed.
However, two shops were saved.
“We received an emergency call at 4.47am and arrived at the scene within nine minutes. No injuries were reported,” he said.
A Perodua Axia parked near the area suffered about 10 per cent damage. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 5.25am and fully extinguished it by 6am.
A total of 12 firefighters were involved in the operation, led by Senior Officer Sulaiman Md Salleh and supported by two police officers.
The team used three water jets and two hose lines stretching 300 feet to douse the flames, drawing water from fire engines and tanks.
The fire department is investigating the cause and assessing the damages to the affected businesses.
