TAWAU: Police arrested a 20-year-old foreign man at Kampung Simpang Tiga Merotai Besar here at about 12.30am on Thursday following a report by a 15-year-old girl alleging she was raped last month.

District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was detained swiftly after police received the report about 22 minutes earlier and launched an operation to trace and apprehend him.

He said a team from Bombalai Police Station arrested the suspect in the village after he was handed over by members of the public, with initial investigations indicating the man had entered and stayed in the country without valid travel documents.

Jasmin said the suspect was taken to Tawau Police Station for further action, with investigations opened under Section 376 of the Penal Code involving rape of a girl below 16 years of age.

He said the victim reported the incident occurred at about 2am on Feb 11 in a bedroom at her cousin’s house in Kampung Simpang Tiga Merotai Besar, and advised those facing crime, harassment or sexual violence to report immediately to enable prompt action under the law.
