LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Lahad Datu has increased monitoring efforts in several coastal and low-lying areas as a precautionary measure against the ongoing high tide phenomenon.
In a statement posted on Facebook, APM said the operation aims to ensure public safety and readiness for an early response, including evacuation if the situation worsens.
The focus has been on densely populated settlements and stilt villages identified as high-risk locations during high tide periods. Among the areas under close observation are Pasar Rakyat Lahad Datu, Kampung Sabah Baru, Kampung Desa Bajau, Sungai Kampung Mundas in Tungku, Kampung Dengan in Tungku, and the coastal areas of Sahabat 17.
Continuous monitoring allows APM to record real-time water levels, detect sudden surges, and issue timely alerts to local residents.
The coordinated effort, which involves multiple APM offices and field units, highlights the agency’s commitment to proactive disaster management.
As part of the operation, APM has also carried out community engagement activities under *Op Ramah*, offering safety advice and raising awareness, especially among residents of coastal and stilt villages.
The public is reminded to remain vigilant and follow safety guidance from authorities, including staying updated through official channels. Residents are encouraged to prepare emergency kits containing essential documents, medications, dry food, and clothing.
For urgent assistance or to report rising water levels, the public can contact the Lahad Datu Disaster Operations Control Centre at 089-880991 or dial 999.
