Fire damages storage facility in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: A storage warehouse containing palm oil fibre at IOI Edible Oils Sdn Bhd caught fire early Tuesday, causing partial damage to the facility.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Control Centre received an emergency call at 2.46am. Fire engines from the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene at 3.08am after travelling approximately 15 kilometres.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station Chief PKPgB Jimmy Lagung said the fire involved a permanent warehouse made up of three building blocks.

“One of the three blocks was about 40 per cent destroyed by the fire, while the other two blocks were successfully saved from being engulfed,” he said in a statement.

Initial firefighting efforts were undertaken by the factory’s Emergency Response Team (ERT), which deployed two 200ft hose lines with water jets from nearby fire hydrants before the arrival of firefighters.

Upon reaching the site, the Fire Department used two water jets supplied by a water tanker.

The blaze was brought under control at 3.52am, and operations wrapped up at 5.40am after authorities confirmed there were no further risks at the scene.
