PENAMPANG: The district’s current business operation licence fee structure, which calculates charges primarily based on the operational floor area, has prompted concerns from local operators, according to Penampang Municipal Councillor Richard Chong.
“In principle, the larger the operating space, the higher the licence fee payable. This system was introduced to ensure that businesses operating in larger premises contribute fees that are fair and proportionate to the scale of their operations,” Chong said in a statement.
However, four business operators — a restaurant, a bakery, a food processing factory and an automotive service centre — have reported that the revised fees are placing financial pressure on their operations amid rising costs and the current economic climate.
“They hope the relevant authorities will consider reviewing and reassessing the fee structure,” he said.
Chong said he would be compiling the cases to bring them to the Council’s management.
He plans to recommend that the relevant departments study the current fee mechanism further to ensure policies remain fair while addressing challenges faced by small and medium-sized businesses.
“The Council’s goal in implementing policies has always been to promote local economic development while safeguarding public interest.
“If there is a need to refine or improve the current fee structure, I am confident the relevant authorities will make the most appropriate decision after careful study and discussion,” he said.
He urged business operators to continue sharing their views through proper channels to help foster a sustainable business environment in Penampang.
