SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) Market, Tamu and Hawkers Committee conducted inspections at several Ramadan bazaar locations, covering areas from Mile 8 to the coastal highway in the town centre.

Among those present during the inspection were MPS councillors Chong Thien Ming, Liew Kian Vun, Mohd Ali and Fung Yee Soon, together with Head of the Market Unit Ahmad Naquip.

The team visited six of the eight Ramadan bazaar sites listed under the council.

The inspection aimed to monitor vendors’ compliance with health regulations, assess stall operating conditions, and review the pricing of food and beverages sold by traders.

Councillor Chong, who led the councillor delegation, said the team was generally satisfied with the overall condition of the stalls, although some areas still require improvement.

He noted that inspectors from the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) are also conducting regular checks on food handling practices and hygiene standards at the bazaars.

“We want to ensure that all food sold to the public is in safe and acceptable condition, as preventing food poisoning is a major concern,” he said.

Chong added that strict regulations have been enforced on all vendors since the start of the Ramadan bazaar operations.

Traders who fail to comply with the guidelines may face fines or have their licences revoked for the remainder of the Ramadan period.

The committee also assured the public that monitoring activities will continue throughout the Ramadan season to ensure that food sold at the bazaars remains safe for public consumption.
