More rubbish bins needed at Kunak Plaza
Rubbish bins at Kunak Plaza are full and unable to accommodate the volume of solid waste, especially during Ramadan and festive seasons.
KUNAK: The concession company responsible for solid waste collection here is urged to add more roll-on roll-off (roro) bins in the commercial area of Kunak Plaza to accommodate the increasing volume of daily waste.

Kunak District Council Executive Officer Mohd Nazri Pintal said this followed complaints from users about overflowing solid waste outside the bins in the area.

At present, only a few domestic wheeled bins and one roro bin are provided at Kunak Plaza for public use, but these are still insufficient to cope with the amount of solid waste disposed of each day.

“The council will contact the concession company to add another roro bin at Kunak Plaza to accommodate the volume of domestic waste,” he told Daily Express, Sunday.

Mohd Nazri said waste collection and disposal works are carried out according to schedule, with additional trips by existing lorries and compactors.

He said the increase in waste volume was expected, as in previous years, during festive seasons such as Chinese New Year, Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Typically, solid waste increases significantly by between 10 and 30 per cent during festive periods, especially throughout Ramadan and leading up to Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

This includes higher volumes of food waste, bulky waste and packaging materials.

A Daily Express survey found that cleaning workers had to work overtime to manage the surrounding area to ensure that scattered and piled-up rubbish outside the bins was not rummaged through by stray animals.
