United front needed to advance Sabah’s MA63 rights

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah youth leaders and activists say a united front to strengthen the state’s claim under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) is achievable if political veterans set aside rivalries and avoid perpetuating divisions.

Representatives from Upko, Warisan and SAPP, alongside civil society groups, gathered at a townhall on Sunday to call for constitutional compliance and a clear resolution on Sabah’s 40 per cent entitlement.

They stressed that MA63 is a collective responsibility rather than the struggle of any single party, with speakers highlighting unity as essential despite differing approaches.

Speakers also pointed to a contradiction in Sabah politics where unity exists in principle but fragmentation persists in practice, with youth efforts often constrained by existing political structures.

The group criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the 40 per cent entitlement ahead of the March 31 hearing on its stay application, urging clarity, sincerity and full compliance with the Federal Constitution while calling for an end to delays.
