SIPITANG: The public has been urged to exercise caution at Marintaman Beach, particularly along the Sipitang coastline, after warnings about the presence of crocodile habitats.

Former Sindumin Community Development Leader Sani Miasin made the statement to the Daily Express on Saturday, explaining that crocodiles, once mostly found in rivers, are now increasingly moving into coastal waters.

As a result, those visiting the beach for picnics or recreational activities are advised to stay alert. Crocodiles are no longer confined to rivers and have been sighted in the sea, especially in coastal areas.

“Crocodiles today are different. When they’re hungry, they search for prey and venture towards the sea, particularly beaches in districts like ours, which have both coastline and open waters,” Sani said.

He warned that people, especially bathers, could be attacked suddenly, as crocodiles can strike without warning. Parents are urged to closely supervise their children when swimming or playing near the water.

Sani also emphasised that crocodiles had adapted to surviving in saltwater, making it crucial for the public to stay cautious whenever near the coast.

This supports the growing belief that crocodiles can now be found almost anywhere, citing reports of sightings in Labuan, Pulau Eno and Kampung Negalang.

In the past year, a fisherman was attacked by a crocodile while getting off his boat, and his body was never recovered. This led authorities to issue instructions to shoot the crocodile if it was found.

In Weston, several crocodiles were shot by the Wildlife Department, resulting in the deaths of medium-sized crocs.

Recently, a fisherman, Muhd Nur Farezsyah Ahmad, caught a crocodile in his fishing net but later released it back into the river.
