TAWAU: The Public Works Department (PWD) has been instructed to commence a comprehensive feasibility study to address increasingly critical traffic congestion in the district, particularly between the town centre and Jalan Apas.
The directive from the Chief Minister is aimed at assessing the effectiveness of identified technical proposals to ensure long-term traffic flow improvements in the state’s third-largest town, said Youth, Sports Development and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan (

He said the study focuses on three key infrastructure proposals, namely the introduction of the Tawau Bypass to divert traffic away from the town centre and densely populated areas along Jalan Apas, the construction of two flyovers at Bulatan Keris Batu 4 Jalan Apas and Takada, and the proposed Tawau Coastal Highway as an alternative route and economic catalyst.
Nizam said the proposals are under serious consideration to assess their technical viability and economic impact on local residents, and that he had personally submitted the proposals to the Chief Minister.
He was speaking at a State Government policy and Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0 briefing during a gathering with civil servants here on Monday.
