TAWAU: The initial drought disaster declaration for Pulau Sebatik issued by the Tawau District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) at 10am on Wednesday has been withdrawn.
Tawau Municipal Council president Joseph Pang, who is also Tawau JPBD chairman, said in a statement issued at about 1.50pm that the decision was made in line with the views of the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN).
He said the withdrawal followed a review and monitoring by authorities, which found that current conditions no longer met the criteria of a drought disaster as defined.
He added that water supply and weather conditions in Tawau remained under control and stable, although water shortages in parts of Pulau Sebatik were becoming a concern.
He said authorities would continue discussions and monitoring from time to time to ensure the situation remained under control, while advising the public to refer to official channels for updates and to use water prudently.
