PUTATAN: Eight houses were destroyed and another partly damaged in a fire at Kampung Pasir Putih, here, Monday afternoon.
According to the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department, an emergency call was received at 1.35pm, prompting a swift response from personnel at three fire stations.
A total of 38 firefighters from Putatan, Penampang and Kota Kinabalu were deployed, supported by other agencies including the police, Civil Defence Force, Social Welfare Department and Putatan District Council.
Firefighters used five hose lines, with water supplied from fire engines, a water tanker and nearby hydrants. The fire was brought under control by 2.33pm and operations concluded at 5.51pm after the area was declared safe.
Operation Commander PKPgB Noor Sherriyana Bohari said the fire involved nine temporary stilt houses covering an estimated area of 20 by 60 metres.
“Eight houses were completely destroyed, while one sustained minor damage.
“No casualties were reported. Our teams acted quickly to contain the fire and prevent further damage,” she said, adding that safety checks were conducted before ending operations.
Residents affected by the fire are being assisted and authorities are assessing the cause and further measures to prevent similar incidents in the area.
