Kota Kinabalu: Warisan Api-Api candidate Loi Kok Liang (pic) noted concerns raised directly by traders regarding the Kota Kinabalu Central Market’s deteriorating condition during a visit on Wednesday.
He said traders pointed out several issues requiring attention, including non-functioning exhaust fans, potholes on the market floor that may pose safety risks, and continued roof leaks in the fish market section.
Loi stated that these matters relate to basic maintenance requirements and that both traders and members of the public rely on a safe and functional market environment.
“I urge Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) to take immediate action to address the long-neglected problems as the Central Market remains a vital economic hub supporting hundreds of local families, as well as an important destination for visitors,” he said.
During the walkabout, he said traders shared past operational challenges, including water supply disruptions, and recounted occasions when assistance had been provided to help maintain their ability to carry out daily business activities.
“Many fishmongers also noted past support in resolving household water access issues,” he said.
Loi commented that the concerns expressed by traders highlight the importance of consistent upkeep and responsive action from relevant authorities.
He reiterated that effective public service requires prioritising basic infrastructure and market maintenance to safeguard livelihoods and ensure reliable community facilities.
