Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu City Police have received a report of a scam involving individuals impersonating police officers to solicit donations for a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration allegedly linked to the Sabah police contingent.
Acting Kota Kinabalu City Police Chief Syed Lot bin Syed AB Rahman said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect used forged letters on the official letterhead of the Sabah Police Contingent to request contributions, claiming the funds were for the 2026 Aidilfitri celebration of the Traffic and Transport Department at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK Sabah).
“The Kota Kinabalu Commercial Crime Investigation Division has opened an investigation following the report received,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Syed Lot advised the public to remain vigilant, particularly when receiving donation requests via WhatsApp claiming to be linked to police activities.
He urged people to verify any such requests with the authorities before making transactions.
“The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) calls on all segments of society to stay alert to the latest scam tactics to avoid becoming victims,” he added.
