Kota Kinabalu: The National Union of Sabah Port Companies Employees and the Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd Workers’ Union have expressed strong support for the proposed amendments to the Employee Social Security Act (Amendments) 2025 and the Employment Insurance System Act (Amendments) 2025.
The unions said the amendments, including the introduction of the Non-Workplace Accident Scheme (SKBBK), are crucial for expanding social protection to employees who experience accidents outside of working hours. They added that the move reflects the evolving nature of employment, including remote and gig-based work.
The proposed Employment Insurance System amendments, which have passed their first reading in the Dewan Rakyat, aim to enhance benefits for Social Security Organisation (Socso) contributors who lose their jobs.
A key feature of the proposal is the RM1,000 Mobility Assistance Allowance (EBM) for contributors who accept employment more than 100 kilometres from their residence.
The unions described this as a progressive measure to help moderate- and low-income workers manage transportation costs, rental deposits, or temporary expenses before receiving their first salary.
“These amendments show that Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong remains committed to safeguarding workers’ welfare. Even after the historic gig worker legislation, the Minister continues to introduce meaningful benefits for employees,” said National Union of Sabah Port Companies Employees President and Sabah Ports Workers’ Union Executive Advisor Mohd Airy Arin (pic).
The unions urged for both bills to be passed without delay or interference and stressed that implementation should involve union participation and remain free from bureaucratic obstacles.
They also called for the SKBBK to be recognised as a fundamental right of workers rather than an optional benefit and requested that Socso clearly communicate contribution rates to avoid adding financial strain on employees.
“Workers in Sabah are fortunate to have a Minister who genuinely fights for their welfare. These new benefits are a step forward in ensuring stronger social protection and smoother re-entry into the workforce,” Mohd Airy added.
