KENINGAU: Human remains found along the riverbank at Kg Sigapon on Friday evening are believed to be those of 10-year-old Muhd Aidan Ridwan Abdullah who went missing with his grandfather at Sungai Pagalan last Tuesday.
They are thought to have been carried by strong river currents some 23km from the initial location.
Keningau District Police Chief Supt Yampil Anak Garai said authorities received an emergency call at about 9.17pm, after a man fishing in the area noticed a strong unpleasant odour and observed two monitor lizards near the riverbank.
He approached the area and after coming across human remains returned to his home in Kg Gaulan to inform his cousin before alerting police.
Yampil said the remains were in an advanced state of decomposition due to prolonged exposure to the environment and wildlife. The victim was initially reported missing near Taman Bersatu in Sungai Pagalan last Tuesday.
In RANAU, a teenager drowned after going for a swim with his friends in Kg Paginatan Ranau, Saturday evening.
Fredy Andy, a Form 3 student, joined three other friends at Sungai Liwagu at about 5.30pm due to the hot weather.
However, their assumption that the river water had receded due to the dry weather for several weeks was proven wrong.
Ranau Fire Station Chief who is also Senior Operations Commander, PPgB Rantey Fred said, Sabah PGO received an emergency call regarding the incident via the NG999 line.
The victim's friends tried to rescue him but were unsuccessful. The victim was found by villagers at 6 pm and sent to the Paginatan Health Clinic, Ranau before the arrival of the Fire Department.
