KOTA KINABALU: The century-old Atkinson Clock Tower has officially reopened to visitors following a RM11 million beautification project ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah said the project aimed to preserve the city’s heritage while enhancing recreational, educational, and tourism experiences.
Among the upgrades were new landscaping, lighting, seating, and CCTV installations along a 500-metre tree-top walkway linking the Clock Tower to the Signal Hill Observatory Tower.
Sabin said the works also included improving public facilities, drainage systems, and people with disability (PWD)-friendly access while addressing erosion risks at the historic site.
He said the project, completed in September with support from the Economy Ministry and Sedia, reflects City Hall’s commitment to heritage preservation and sustainable urban development.
