KENINGAU: Traffic congestion in Keningau, particularly in the main town areas and entry routes, is worsening, sparking concerns among residents over daily travel disruptions and potential economic impacts.
A media survey indicates that congestion has intensified over the past few years, especially during morning and evening peak hours. Many road users say the situation is becoming increasingly difficult to manage.
A motorist in Keningau town said, “Traffic from the junction heading into town is already congested early in the morning. Sometimes, even leaving home means waiting in a long queue. If this continues, it’s not impossible that in a few years, Keningau will face constant gridlock like a major city.”
Residents are urging authorities, including local councils and relevant departments, to implement effective solutions before the problem worsens.
Suggestions include building new bypass roads linking residential areas to main routes, re-coordinating traffic light systems, and creating dedicated lanes for public transport and emergency vehicles.
Some believe that future urban planning should be more systematic, as the growing number of vehicles is outpacing improvements to existing road infrastructure.
Keningau, a key district in Sabah’s interior region, is experiencing rapid development. Officials are being called upon to address traffic congestion promptly to ensure that progress does not compromise residents’ quality of life.
Sources said the issue has been raised multiple times by the local community, who hope a long-term plan can be formulated to make Keningau’s traffic system safer, more organized, and efficient.
