KENINGAU: Three acres were destroyed in a grass fire in Taman Pasir Putih, on Saturday. Fire and Rescue Station Chief Serevinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sinkui said nine firefighters, along with FRT, BNA, and EMRS units, were dispatched to the scene at 3.09pm.
“Firefighters extinguished the blaze using fire beaters, with no reported casualties or damage to public property,” he said.
The Fire and Rescue Department urged residents of Keningau to remain vigilant due to the current hot and dry weather conditions, which make fires easier to ignite and spread rapidly.
Serevinus also advised the public to refrain from open burning, noting that such actions not only inconvenience others but can also lead to serious consequences.
“Open burning produces smoke that contributes to severe haze, affects the health of vulnerable groups such as children, asthma patients, and the elderly, and puts nearby homes and lives at risk if the fire gets out of control,” he said.
He further reminded the public not to take the matter lightly, as under the Environmental Quality Act 1974, individuals found guilty of open burning may face a compound of up to RM2,000 per offence, or a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
“Do not burn rubbish, garden waste, or dry leaves in your yard or farm. Instead, dispose of them at designated waste disposal sites. Never discard lit cigarette butts in bush areas, roadside verges, or forests,” he added.
He also advised parents to ensure that children do not play with firecrackers or fireworks near dry vegetation.
Additionally, those conducting outdoor activities such as barbecues (BBQ) should ensure a nearby water source is available and that all embers are fully extinguished before leaving the area.
The public is urged to report any fire incidents or open burning activities immediately, as safety is a shared responsibility and essential for protecting the environment.
