KENINGAU: Liawan Assemblyman Datuk Nik Mohd Nadzri Nik Zawawi said the government should review the allowances paid to Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) secretaries and village chiefs to strengthen grassroots administration.
While welcoming the government’s recent decision to raise JKKK chairman allowances from RM800 to RM1,000 per month, Nadzri said other positions within the village administrative structure also warranted a review.
“If possible, allowances for village chiefs and secretaries should also be increased. I understand that village secretaries currently receive only around RM300 a month.
We hope the government will take note of this,” he told reporters at an Aidilfitri open house here.
He said raising allowances across the board would directly improve the motivation and commitment of local leaders in managing village affairs more effectively, particularly given rising living costs.
Nadzri also reminded newly appointed JKKK chairmen that their roles carry serious responsibilities beyond simply receiving a monthly allowance.
“Being appointed as a JKKK chairman is not merely an honour or a platform for financial benefit. It is a significant trust to ensure the development and wellbeing of villagers are always protected,” he said.
On the status of JKKK chairman appointments within Liawan, he said the process was in its final stages, with letters of appointment from the ministry expected to be issued shortly.
On another note, Nadzri, who was recently appointed Muis Holding Sdn Bhd Chairman, described the role as a major responsibility requiring a high level of commitment.
He said Muis Holding is a newly established Government-Linked Company set up to manage and strengthen investments linked to the Sabah Islamic Religious Council.
“The establishment of this company is a strategic move to ensure that economic management and assets are handled in a structured manner, while generating sustainable returns for Muis and Sabah.
“This is a challenge and, God willing, I will do my utmost to ensure Muis Holding grows as a viable and profitable GLC,” he said.
