Kota Kinabalu: Brain drain or the loss of young professionals who have been educated, trained or skilled at Malaysian tax payers’ expense but migrate due to unfriendly conditions at home or greener pastures is one of the most urgent challenges facing Sabah and Malaysia.
Citing World Bank statistics, where he once worked, Tan Sri Andrew Sheng said Malaysia’s brain drain is among the most glaring in Southeast Asia with over 1.5 million Malaysians now helping the economies of other nations.
He said thousands of young professionals continue to emigrate annually to robust economies and innovative ecosystems.
They are mostly frustrated by stagnant wages, limited career progression and inadequate infrastructure.
