Kota Kinabalu: The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) destroyer JS Asahi arrived at the Sepanggar Naval Base, Friday, as part of its Overseas Training Cruise 2026, reinforcing growing security ties between Japan and Malaysia under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The port call, conducted in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), involves some 250 personnel including graduates of the 78th Aviation Officer Candidate Course, and represents a shared commitment to maintaining a free and open maritime order in the Indo-Pacific region.
“The purpose of the Overseas Training Cruise is to provide officer trainees with practical, hands-on experience, enabling them to acquire the operational knowledge and skills required of junior officers,” said JMSDF Commanding Officer, Commander Jo Takemasa.
“By engaging in exchanges with foreign countries and navigating waters such as the South China Sea, the trainees gain a better understanding of the activities of other nations and develop an international perspective,” he added.
