Kota Kinabalu: The 24th Borneo Ladies Golf Challenge Trophy 2026 teed off with 121 participants at the Sabah Golf and Country Club (SGCC) on Wednesday morning.
Host Sabah has the largest contingent with 81 members followed by Sarawak with 29, Brunei with 10 and Labuan with four.
Organising chairlady Datin Dr Jeanette Tambakau said the annual event, which has blossomed since it started in 1991 remains one of the most anticipated highlights for lady golfers across the island of Borneo.
“It is a radiant tradition that unites us in passion for the game and precious bonds we forge on and off the fairways, and the strong participants truly reflects the growing spirit and unity of the ladies of Borneo,” she said at the Hi-Tea Ceremony held at SGCC on Tuesday.
Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, who was the guest of honour welcomed all the participants and reminded them that the event goes beyond the competition and the trophies.
“To all 121 players, enjoy these two wonderful days. Play with heart and grace, reconnect with old friends, make new ones and create lasting memories surrounded by Sabah’s natural beauty. Above all, let the true spirit shine through goodwill, camaraderie and the joy of the game.
“It is the sisterhood; the laughter shared on the fairways, the stories exchanged in the clubhouse and the enduring friendships that transcend borders.
“That is why I am especially delighted that we are hosting this 24th edition here on home soil at the Sabah Golf and Country Club. With its stunning scenery and challenging layout, it provides the perfect setting to celebrate this remarkable legacy once again,” he said.
He also commented on Jeanette and her organising committee for their hard work to ensure the success of the event.
“Your commitment, creativity and passion have ensured that this tournament continues to grow stronger each year.
“Through your collaboration with the Malaysian Ladies Golf Association and initiatives such as “Golf for Girls”, you are opening doors for young Sabah talents and inspiring more girls to take up the game.
“It is truly encouraging to see more of our homegrown juniors stepping confidently onto the international stage and representing Malaysia with pride.
“Events like this do more than develop skilled golfers; they nurture confident, resilient and empowered young women who will shape the future of sport in Sabah,” he said.
