Steps taken prior to Sandakan water shutdown
SANDAKAN: The Jabatan Air Negeri Sabah (JANS) Sandakan division will ensure all water storage tanks are filled to maximum capacity by April 12 as a preparatory measure ahead of the temporary shutdown of the Segaliud Water Treatment Plant starting April 13.

JANS Sandakan Engineer Ts Nelly Juee Phillip said water tankers would be deployed in the event of shortages, with priority given to critical areas such as hospitals, as well as requests submitted through official channels.

She said this during a meeting with six Parti Warisan Assemblymen, namely Calvin Chong (Elopura), Alex Thien (Tanjung Papat), Lisa Alban (Sungai Sibuga), Alias Sani (Sekong), Alex Wong (Karamunting) and Arunarnsin Taib (Gum-Gum).

Among the key issues raised was the situation in Bandar Prima, where repair works involving three major leaks will be carried out during the Segaliud plant shutdown beginning April 13.

The meeting also discussed ageing pipelines in Taman Nasalim, which are currently being replaced, as well as ongoing efforts to identify suitable locations for pipe storage.

The six Warisan Assemblymen also highlighted prolonged water disruptions in several housing areas in Elopura, including Taman Sentosa, Sri Taman, Taman Mesra, Taman Hing Lee, the Sedco area and Kam Jai Yen.

Nelly said the disruptions were largely caused by serious water theft. She added that registered residents would be provided with water meters, while any new connections must be made through meter owners with applicable charges.

She further noted that unresolved pipe leaks and ageing infrastructure were also contributing to the problem, with some locations experiencing multiple leaks due to deteriorating pipes.

Meanwhile, the assemblymen have called for an equipment audit to ensure all works meet required standards and public expectations, and pledged to raise the matter at the State Legislative Assembly for more comprehensive action.
