SANDAKAN: A disturbing case of animal abandonment involving five puppies has sparked public outrage after the incident was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) at the BDC industrial area here.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 9.30pm, shows a vehicle stopping briefly before the puppies were left behind. Footage reveals the animals running after the car as it drove away, appearing distressed and disoriented. The driver did not stop or return, leaving the puppies stranded.

Authorities have confirmed that the vehicle’s license plate is clearly visible in the recording, providing a strong lead for investigations.

The case has been formally reported by Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Sandakan to the Sabah Department of Veterinary Services on 25 March 2026. Officials stated that investigations are currently underway.

In the meantime, the five puppies have been rescued and are under temporary care by a volunteer. Their current condition has not been officially disclosed, but they are reported to be safe.

Animal welfare groups have condemned the act, describing it as deliberate abandonment rather than an act of desperation. They are urging authorities to take swift and firm action against the individual responsible.

Members of the public are also being encouraged to report cases of animal abuse or neglect to the relevant authorities. Advocacy groups stress that community vigilance plays a key role in preventing such incidents.
