EXCLUSIVE: Energy crisis justifies the need for a refinery, while the Iran war has exposed the vulnerability of relying on the Gulf: Harris

Kota Kinabalu: Former Chief Minister Tan Sri Harris Mohd Salleh hopes the global energy crisis due to the ongoing Iran war may finally justify building an oil refinery in Labuan, besides other storage facilities for the north Asia market, especially China.

Harris said the Federal Government had long overlooked the logic of building refining capacity closer to where more than 60 per cent of Malaysia’s oil and gas are produced, which is Sabah and Sarawak.

“I think they should do this in Labuan as it will also boost the island’s economy,” Harris told Daily Express in an exclusive interview.

The veteran statesman was responding to a question on why Sabah, despite being a major oil and gas producer, lacked a refinery of its own, while refineries were built in Johor and Melaka across the South China Sea which had no oil or gas.
