RANAU: A total of 19,096 students from Sabah and 14,822 students from Sarawak benefited from student loan facilities provided by the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), according to Ranau Member of Parliament, Datuk Jonathan Yasin.
In a recent statement, Jonathan revealed that across Malaysia, Mara has extended its educational loan services to 628,900 students, enabling them to pursue their studies at various academic levels, including preparatory, diploma, bachelor’s degree, as well as postgraduate (Masters and PhD) and professional courses, both at domestic and international institutions.
“The relevant studies include all levels, starting from the preparatory stage to diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, and even postgraduate studies, both locally and overseas,” Jonathan said.
The statement comes after Jonathan raised a question in the Dewan Rakyat asking the Minister of Rural and Regional Development to clarify how many scholarships have been provided by Mara since its establishment and how many students from Sabah and Sarawak have received these scholarships.
The response from the ministry highlighted the agency’s significant role in empowering Bumiputera human capital through education since Mara’s founding on March 1, 1966.
“Mara’s educational loan sponsorship program, which includes convertible loans, has been crucial in providing substantial benefits to many Malaysians over the years,” Jonathan added.
The MP underscored that the loan facilities have played a critical role in enabling students from across the country to access higher education, ultimately contributing to the nation’s development by empowering individuals with the skills and qualifications needed to excel in various fields.
Mara, a government agency established with the mission of supporting Bumiputera educational advancement, continues to be an integral part of Malaysia’s commitment to human capital development and the empowerment of its citizens through accessible education.
