SANDAKAN: A 28-year-old woman and her seven-year-old daughter were killed in a road accident at Mile 23, Labuk Road, on Saturday.
The incident, which occurred at about 4pm, involved a motorcycle carrying three family members travelling from Sandakan towards Beluran and a Proton Wira heading from Bukit Garam towards the town centre.
Preliminary police investigations found that the motorcycle attempted to overtake another vehicle by entering the opposite lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming car.
The seven-year-old pillion rider was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman died while receiving treatment at the Duchess of Kent Hospital.
Their bodies were taken to the hospital’s Forensic Unit for post-mortem examinations.
The motorcycle rider and the car driver sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, while district police chief ACP George Abd Rakman advised road users to remain cautious and comply with traffic regulations at all times.
